EMA's Director of Public Affairs Tackles “Tiger”

Local Media Look to PR Expert for Analysis following Tiger Woods Public Appearance

BUFFALO, NY — When golf's best broke his silence and apologized for marital indiscretions during a televised talk on Friday, NBC Affiliate WGRZ-TV in Buffalo, N.Y., called Steve Bell, director of public affairs at Eric Mower and Associates (EMA) for analysis.

During Woods' first public appearance since November when he ran his SUV over a fire hydrant and allegations of infidelity began piling up, he made a statement to friends, sponsors, fellow PGA players, media and fans.

WGRZ-TV Anchor John Beard asked Bell if Woods did what he needed to do to reconcile with the public and his fans.

“While the statement Tiger made was artfully delivered and showed a humbled Woods, from a public relations and crisis management standpoint, Tiger had an opportunity to roar and he meowed. By not answering questions and drilling a stake into this thing, he only perpetuated the story instead of ending it,” Bell said.

Since joining EMA in 2006, Bell has provided crisis communications support for a number of EMA's regional and national clients including, Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart, New Era Cap Co., YWCA, South Buffalo Charter School, and others. Previously, Bell spent 20 years guiding coverage at Upstate New York's largest newspaper, The Buffalo News, where he served as editorial page editor, managing editor, city editor and business editor. Prior to his role at The Buffalo News, Bell was a reporter for the Associated Press in Buffalo and Albany.
